The American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM)
recently published specification D 6707, a new standard specification
for circular-knit geotextile used in subsurface drainage applications.
Impetus for the new specification came from Carriff Corporation Inc.,
Midland, N.C. "The new specification is the result of
three years’ of hard work by everyone on the ASTM Task Group."
The ASTM Task Group that developed the specification
included geotextile and pipe manufacturers, testers, and representatives
from the State Department of Highways. The new ASTM specification (D
6707) offers consistency to design engineers and to specifiers, ensuring
that the product specified will meet the standard. The test procedures
and recommendations can be used to determine the acceptable performance
properties of circular-knit geotextiles for acceptance testing.
The specification relates to circular-knit geotextile
used to wrap subsurface drainage pipes. Subsurface drainage pipes are
wrapped with circular-knit geotextile to prevent them from filling with
sand or sediment. The fabric is applied to the outside of the pipe, thus
eliminating the need to wrap the entire trench. The stretchable,
seamless geotextile has been successfully used in drainage applications
for 25 years. Drain-Sleeve® is Carriff Corporation’s product offering
for this application.
